418 - 447 Mangawhai Heads and Ashley!

Nice walk today. Out of Waipu, then roughly 12kms of road walking made somewhat better by half it being on a metalled bike trail. Up through pine forest to the top of the Brynderwyns and out to Bream Tail to meet up with the Mangawhai Walkway.

There was one point where I lost the trail at the bottom of a hill. It turned out I just had to look left and up a bit in the end. I should have realised it would go up the steepest way.

Spectacular views and good weather meant that the walk was fairly easy and interesting. There are a lot of very flash houses. Well, flash for me at least.

At 2:30 I was sitting by a telephone box at Mangawhai Heads (nice to see where ABC go) when, out of the blue, my obviously psychic daughter turned up. A couple of minutes later we were passing Lindsay and Alison (a couple from near Bluff that are walking home) and I felt compelled to yell,"I'm not cheating!" out the window as we passed.

20mins later we were at Ashley's and I was trying to make a dent in my grandfatherly duties by getting Aubrey to smile.

Hindsight

  • There are some seriously nice empty houses in New Zealand.
  • Daughters and granddaughters are great.
