Posteo setup for Kmail, Contacts and Calendar
Firstly, Posteo is a German environmentally and security friendly provider that costs €12 per year. I like it.
- 2 GB email account, upgradeable
- Fetched by IMAP/POP3, 50 MB attachments
- Calendar and address book (synchronisable)
- 100% green electricity from Greenpeace Energy
- All saved data can be encrypted at the click of a button
- Comprehensive encryption
- Two-factor authentication (TOTP) available
- Ad-free website, ad-free email account
- Sign up without entering personal details
- Pay anonymously by bank transfer, cash or PayPal
- Personal support at no additional charge
This is a setup guide for it when using Kontact, the KDE PIM. All the information is from Posteo’s Help section so go there if you need more info but if you are using Kontact then hopefully this will make things a little easier.
Kmail setup
Kmail setup should be easy as the parameters for Posteo are already in the Account Wizard so you can just enter your email address and password and run the wizard. There is a brief run-down here. If you are still having problems check against these settings or see if there is an update on the website.

Contacts setup
You can also setup your contacts using CardDav to access and synchronise with Posteo. The online instructions are here.
To do it in Kontact,
- Go to your Contacts tab.
- Right click in the white space under the Address Books column and choose Add Address Book.
- Choose Dav groupware resource.
- Enter your email address and password for your Posteo account and select Next.
- Choose a display name for what you want the configuration to be called.
- I change the refresh rate up to 10 minutes but the default is fine.
- Make sure your username and password are all ready filled in and fill in if not.
- Click Add under Server Configuration.
- Select CardDav as the protocol.
- Enter the Remote URL as https://posteo.de:8843/addressbooks/john.example/default replacing the john.default part with the beginning of your email address (before the @).
- Under Discovered Collections select fetch and then highlight the fetched resource.
- Select OK and everything should start to synchronise.
If you have any problems check here to see if anything has changed. The usual one for me is that I have chosen CalDav instead of CardDav.
Calendar setup
Calendar setup is basically the same as setting up Contacts except that you choose CalDav instead of Carddev. Again, if you have any problems see if there has been a change at Posteo.
- Go to your Calendars tab.
- Right click in the white space where the calendars are and choose Add Calendar.
- Select CalDav as the protocol.
- Enter the Remote URL as https://posteo.de:8443/calendars/john.example/default replacing the john.default part with the beginning of your email address (before the @).
- Under Discovered Collections select fetch and then highlight the fetched resource.
- Select OK and everything should start to synchronise.
