Yunohost
Table of Contents
Friends, countrymen, lend me your servers. Today, I would like to talk about Yunohost, possibly one of the more interestingly named (Why you no host) server environments for people to take control of their own online environment. Yunohost is made for people who either want to get into self hosting or don't want the hassle of configuring everything themselves.
Or, to put it another way, Yunohost is a Debian based solution for a self or virtually hosted application server that allows you to manage your own email server and a myriad of other applications should you choose to install them.
Currently on my server I am running my email, Nextcloud, Gitea and Commento on a 20GB Virtual Machine (VM) with 2GB of RAM and 1 processor for US$5/month. You don't have to run it is a VM though. In fact, it is really more suitable to be run on an old laptop at home. It even has built in features to get around the limits ISP's place on home servers.
You can also run a lot more applications than I am. To give you a list would actually be too long so at the end of this I will place a list of what Yunohost calls "Only high quality" apps. This actually means applications that at this time are being maintained by the community. I place it at the end because there are 301 applications currently being constantly maintained to a high quality.
Community
It must be said that I have only been exposed to the community of Yunohost on Matrix. That being said, I have the highest respect for those members. Absolutely tireless, clear thinking and helpful and not just in a technical sense.
I have seen them deal with everything from things like, "I want to run it upside down in a toaster in my car" to such and such community member is a Nazi and they have dealt with it with such grace and fortitude that I would like to be more like them. I am in awe.
So, please, to stop these people facing burnout bring logs, clear definitions, answer questions and have a little patience. There are only so many angels in the world.
Stability
As far as I can tell Yunohost is also extremely stable. I log in about once a month and update it. That is about it. I have backups paid for on my VM (it is my main email address after all) but in 2 years I have never needed to use them.
The Future
I cannot speak of the future of Yunohost but I can speak of the future of my setup. For one, I will be bring it in house. I can run a mail server from my house (rare in today's environment) and I would like to run more applications on it than current. I think over the next year I will find an old laptop (for power cuts) or something similar and move my VM over. They have a very good backup system so it shouldn't be to hard.
